WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL
OF THE MONTEREY BAY AREA
 Established in 1951

Academic WorldQuest inspires a culture of global engagement in schools across the United States.

Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) is a flagship program of the national network of World Affairs Councils, located in more than 90 communities across the country. It is a team game testing high school students’ knowledge of international affairs, current events, human geography, world history, and culture.

After studying the ten topics, approximately 4,000 students across the country participate in competitions hosted by local World Affairs Councils. Winning teams are invited to represent their high school, city, and local council at the national AWQ competition, held in the spring each year at the Georgetown University Hotel and Conference Center in Washington, DC.

The 2025 local Academic World Quest Competition will be held at the Monterey County Office of Education, 901 Blanco Circle, Salinas, CA.  Local Monterey County winners will go on to represent the county at the national competition in Washington, D.C.  Topics for this year’s competition are listed below, however only schools/teams that register will receive the full study guide from the World Affairs Council of America.

The World Affairs Council of Monterey Bay is thrilled to be selected for the 2025 MCGives! Campaign.  Monterey County Gives! is a collaboration between the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the MC Weekly and the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.  Last year, over $14 million was raised to support local nonprofit organizations like WACMB. Each nonprofit receives 100% of donations plus a pro rata match, thanks to local donors and matching fund sponsors.

Donations to WACMB via MCGives! support Academic World Quest, inspiring high school students and teachers across the United States to embrace a culture of global engagement.

WACMB, in partnership with the Monterey County Office of Education, will hold its 4th Annual AWQ competition on February 14, 2026, and, with your help, send the winning team to Washington DC in April to compete with over 30 high school teams from across the country for the National Championship.
